Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to pause each year and reflect on all of the blessings in our lives. This year, I’d like to encourage you to join me in taking the holiday a step further.
Perhaps instead of simply pausing for a weekend to be thankful, we could use the three days as a springboard to create a habit of thankfulness – a part of our daily routine, like sleep and food and exercise, as fuel to propel our lives, and the lives of others, to new levels. When we choose to create a daily habit of thanksgiving, I suspect we will be surprised by what else we find.
When we focus on thanksgiving, we will also find joy. When we focus on thanksgiving, we will also find hope. When we focus on thanksgiving, we will find love and compassion, peace and commitment. When we talk about the things that we are thankful for (instead of some of the other stuff we all tend to dwell on from time to time), and start to express that appreciation to others, the impact will be contagious.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving Day this year with family and friends – and for some, by ourselves – let’s remember that thanksgiving can be more than just a day, or a sentiment. It can be a life-changing choice – a purposeful decision on how we live every single day. As we make that choice, we’ll be amazed at the change in our lives, in our families, in our communities, and in our country.
So on behalf of my family, my staff, and my colleagues in Ottawa, thank you for all that you do to help make Canada the greatest country in the world in which to live. And may each of you experience a life-changing Thanksgiving this year!
